Among The Among Missing
The absence of one or several teeth at birth – also known as congenital anodontia – can result in both aesthetic and functional issues. Anodontia is fairly common and most often affects the upper lateral incisors (located on either side of two front teeth), second premolars and third molars (wisdom teeth). If a void left by a missing tooth is not filled properly, the adjacent teeth will tend to move toward it, causing further spacing issues.
Sometimes, teeth aren’t actually missing but fail to erupt due to an obstruction and remain buried beneath the gums. An orthodontist will carefully examine x-rays to determine if this is the case, and can then help the teeth into position using orthodontic treatment.
